Beyerdynamic’s M 70 PRO X Dynamic Mic Is Great For Podcasting And Live Streaming

The beyerdynamic M 70 PRO X is an affordable dynamic microphone that’s ideal for live streamers, ... [+] podcasters and even broadcasters.

Dynamic microphones are the ideal choice if you’re recording in a space with poor acoustics or a little too much background noise. Dynamic microphones are less sensitive than condenser microphones, making them ideal for rejecting unwanted sounds like a clicking keyboard or the hum of a computer fan.

The brand-new beyerdynamic M 70 PRO X is an affordable dynamic microphone ideal for live streamers, podcasters and broadcasters working from a home studio or even when recording on location. Most of us don’t have the luxury to record or stream in a space that’s been acoustically treated to eliminate unwanted sounds and reverberations. So, a dynamic microphone is a logical choice unless you build a voice booth or a proper studio.

The beyerdynamic M 70 PRO X is a well-built microphone with a high-quality aluminum body and is designed to be a front-address microphone rather than from the side. Because of its cardioid polar pattern, the M 70 PRO X rejects unwanted noises like echoes and keyboard taps; it’s ideal for live streaming thanks to its high off-axis rejection. Unless the sound is coming directly from in front of the microphone, other noises won’t get picked up, giving the impression that you’re speaking from a studio environment.

The beyerdynamic M 70 PRO X is a well-made dynamic microphone made from aluminium and featuring a ... [+] pressure gradient capsule with good off-axis rejection.

To prevent pops and plosives, beyerdynamic built a pop filter into the M 70 PRO X with a foam layer to protect the capsule. The box includes a pop-screen filter that can attach to the included spider or shock mount, which stops the M 70 PRO X from picking up sounds that might otherwise be transmitted through a mic stand or boom arm.

Like most professional microphones, the beyerdynamic M 70 PRO X has a three-pin XLR connector which enables it to be hooked up to most USB audio interfaces so the sound can be recorded on a computer or even fed live to a SIP or ISDN codec. The microphone needs a lot of gain, but that’s not unusual for a dynamic model.

The sound quality from this well-made microphone is superbly clear and provides a good bottom end with an excellent natural timbre. Initially, I fitted a foam windshield on the microphone, but as it made little difference, I stopped using it. This suggests the built-in pop filter is very effective at taming voices and is particularly important because the beyerdynamic M 70 PRO X needs to be used relatively close to the speaker’s mouth.

The beyerdynamic M 70 PRO X is supplied with a spiderwebbed shock mount and a pop screen.

Verdict: This affordable microphone from beyerdynamic is an excellent dynamic model ideal for use in untreated rooms, whether an outside broadcast or simply live streaming from a bedroom or other space that hasn’t been acoustically treated. The beyerdynamic M 70 PRO X comes with an elegantly designed shock mount and a pop-screen, although you shouldn’t need it as it has a foam pop filter built in. The M 70 PRO X does need quite a bit of gain but nothing that most USB audio interfaces can’t handle. There’s a low self-noise level and to my mind, it’s an interesting alternative to Shure’s SB7M and is a slight step up from Audio-Technica’s excellent and very affordable AT-2040. Recommended.
