The concept of comfort shows is real and Heartstopper Season 2 is probably already on your list. Beyond merely entertaining, when a fictional piece of content resonates dearly, it’s special and most shows in the YA (Young Adult) genre do that. Heartstopper starring Joe Locke and Kit Connor chronicles a beautiful queer teen romance that will give you butterflies in your stomach. The show’s honest representation of concepts of first love, coming out as a teenager and more struck a chord with the audiences in the first and the second season.

If you have already binged the second season of the show and are now trying to fill the void left by it, there are some other amazing teen dramas with similar themes that could lift up your spirits. Several TV shows have captured the carefree nature of young adulthood through impressive storylines. Love Victor

Love, Victor created by Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, is an American teen dramedy inspired by the 2018 film Love, Simon. The show follows Victor (Michael Cimino), a new student at Creekwood High School, who deals with the struggles of adjusting to a new place while also coming to terms with his sexuality. The show captures difficult themes with a sensitive treatment while also remaining a sweet queer romance at its core. If you enjoyed the Nick Robinson starrer film, the show follows a similar treatment and makes for a heartwarming watch. Love, Victor is available to stream on Hulu or Disney+.

Genera+ion

The 2021 show created by Zelda and Daniel Barnz follows the stories of sexually fluid American high schoolers. The show presents a Gen Z perspective and is set in a conservative community in California. The inclusive series explores modern-day relationships perfectly and makes for a fun watch as it puts a new spin on common teen drama tropes. Genera+ion stars Justice Smith, Lukita Maxwell, and Chase Sui Wonders among others. It is streaming on HBO Max.

Sex Education

One of Netflix’s most popular shows, the Asa Butterfield and Emma Mackey starrer teen drama offers sharp writing and brilliant performances from the cast. Opening up a dialogue on the themes of sexuality, consent and more without coming across as preachy, the show manages to make a strong impact. At the heart of the story is also the romance between its lead characters, Otis and Maeve. Three seasons of Sex Education are currently streaming on Netflix.

Never Have I Ever

It’s not easy being a first-generation Indian-American teenager and the show’s protagonist Devi Vishwakarma played by Maitreyi Ramakrishnan showcases that well. The witty writing and John McEnroe’s hilarious voiceover are among the other things that make this series an enjoyable watch. All four seasons of Never Have I Ever are streaming on Netflix.

Young Royals

If you are looking for a dreamy queer romance that makes your heart flutter, this show should be on your watchlist. It follows the story of a young Swedish prince who gets sent to a prestigious boarding school and finds himself surprisingly falling in love. The sincere romantic storyline of the leads makes this show a perfect choice to binge after finishing Heartstopper Season 2. Edvin Ryding’s performance is also the one to watch out for in this show. Derry Girls

Set in 1990s Northern Ireland, the show follows a group of teenagers who try to maintain their innocence and experience the joys of being a teenager amid the backdrop of political conflict. Created by Lisa McGeeCom, the show’s dark humour and performances by Nicola Coughlan, and Saoirse-Monica Jackson among others make it a perfect weekend watch. The show’s three seasons are streaming on Netflix.

The Sex Lives of College Girls

Ever wondered what happens on a college campus when four unlikely personalities find themselves becoming roommates? The Sex Lives of College Girls follows four young women at Essex College. Friendship, romance and honest conversations on teen sexual adventures, this show serves it all with a funny repertoire. Created by Mindy Kaling, two seasons of the show are currently streaming on HBO Max and Amazon Prime Video.
